Puca

Puca

On April 1st, 2024, Puca was found on the road, weak and in poor health. She was named after the Irish word for “Fairy,” Puca was immediately taken to the vet, where she was diagnosed with swollen intestines. The vet feared the worst, suspecting Mycoplasmosis, and prescribed Vibramycin as treatment. After two weeks of medication, Puca’s condition improved significantly, much to the vet’s amazement. The swelling in her intestines had disappeared, and she was finally eating well, although she remained a bit shy and wary. She continued her medication for another two weeks, with the hope that she would regain her strength and put on weight.

However, at the end of June, Puca disappeared, leaving us worried about her well-being. We searched for her, and on July 15th, we were relieved to find her again. Since then, we’ve been keeping a close eye on her, ensuring she stays healthy and continues on her path to recovery.

We began fostering her full-time after she developed a skin infection. Our vet treated her with antibiotics and vitamin injections, and we kept her indoors to help her put on weight before returning her to her colony.

But now, once again, we’re concerned.

Over the past month, Puca hasn’t been eating properly. On the morning of April 10th, 2025, she refused food entirely. That evening, she only ate a few bites. We’ve scheduled an appointment with our local vet for Sunday, and we’re hoping it will give us some clarity on what’s going wrong this time.

Puca’s journey has been anything but easy, but her quiet resilience keeps us going. No matter how many setbacks she faces, we’ll continue to fight for her health and happiness—with your help.

UPDATE: We’re heartbroken to share that our sweet girl Puca passed away peacefully on the morning of May 22nd, 2025.

In the days leading up to her passing, Puca had stopped eating, so we took her to the vet for a full check-up. It was clear she was in pain — her teeth were in very poor condition, and although she was underweight, the vet believed her pain was the most urgent issue to address.

She underwent surgery to ease her suffering, and the operation itself went well. At first, she seemed stable. But hours later, Puca suddenly lost the ability to walk. It happened again early the next morning, and shortly after, she quietly slipped away.

The vet believes the sedation may have affected her liver, as her gums had begun turning yellow — a possible sign of liver failure. Despite our best efforts, her little body simply couldn’t recover.

Puca was deeply loved. She passed knowing she was safe, warm, and cared for — not alone on the street, but in the arms of those who loved her. Her gentle presence left a lasting mark on our sanctuary, and her memory will always be with us.
