Some cats arrive quietly. Others arrive with a crash, literally. And some—like Necter and Crystal—come into your life with stories that unfold slowly, sometimes painfully, but always with meaning.
Their paths were different, but their destination was the same: a place where someone cared enough to stop, to treat, and to stay.

NECTER’S STORY: A Sick Kitten, A Vanished Mother, and a New Beginning
Necter came to us because someone cared enough to speak up. A woman from Athens, visiting family in Galatas, noticed a kitten and his mother struggling on the streets—sick, sneezing, and clearly fighting a nasty case of cat flu. She did what she could, giving them basic treatment while she was in town, but before heading back home, she reached out to us for help.
When we got there, it was clear they were in rough shape. The mother cat was skittish—understandably so. We managed to catch the kitten, but she darted off before we could even get close.
At the vet, Necter was diagnosed with a severe upper respiratory infection. Cat flu can be brutal, especially in young kittens. It causes painful ulcers, runny eyes, congestion, fever, and in some cases, permanent damage. We started treatment immediately—antibiotics, eye meds, steam therapy, and supportive care. He was tiny, underweight, and struggling to breathe. But he hung in there.
Back home, we kept looking out for his mother. We tried leaving medicated food, but that quickly became impossible. Stray cats are everywhere, and the risk of another cat eating the food—or even fighting over it—was too high. We had to back off. We hoped she’d recover on her own.
Weeks later, she did. Somehow.

Once Necter was strong enough, we tried to reunite them. For an entire week, we kept an eye out. We even tried releasing him in areas she’d been seen. But she never came back. It’s heartbreaking, but not uncommon. Strays move. They get spooked, injured, chased off. Sometimes they just vanish.
At that point, Necter was still under three months old. Way too young to fend for himself. So we kept him. He adjusted quickly. Became playful. Learned to trust. Found safety. Found us.
Then, in November, something kind of amazing happened. We caught both Necter and his mother—at the same time. This time, it was for sterilization. She was spayed and released back to her area. He was neutered and stayed with us.

And he’s still with us now. Healthy. Safe. Still that same tiny soul, but stronger, braver, and part of our little crew.
CRYSTAL’S STORY: Hit by a Car, But Still Standing (Metaphorically)
If Necter’s story is quiet and slow, Crystal’s hit fast—like the car that left her spine shattered.
She was found on Poros Island, lying motionless by the road. Someone had seen her get hit, and thankfully, they brought her in. When she arrived, she couldn’t move her back legs. Her spine was broken. She was paraplegic.

For a lot of people, that would’ve been the end. A cat with no use of her back legs, no control over her bladder or bowels, high risk of infections, and a huge need for hands-on daily care—it’s overwhelming. But when she looked at us, she wasn’t scared. She was calm. And she was there. Present. Alive. Not ready to go.
So we didn’t let her.
We committed to her care. Not just vet visits and meds, but daily bladder expression (multiple times a day), special diets to keep her digestion smooth, clean soft bedding, antiseptic wipes to keep her skin protected, and lots of monitoring. We watched for signs of infection. We learned what made her comfortable. And we adjusted—because she was worth it.
In November, things got tricky. She developed a large abscess near her hip, which we treated twice a day with Betadine and antiseptic creams. Just as that began to heal, she got hit with a urinary tract infection—a common and serious risk for paraplegic cats. She went through a round of Borflox antibiotics. It worked, but the cost—both emotionally and financially—was real.
Still, Crystal never gave up. She’s a quiet fighter. She doesn’t make a fuss. She just keeps going.
She’s bonded with other cats. She loves calm company. She watches everything with these slow, blinking eyes, like she’s taking it all in. There’s something about her—a stillness, a quiet strength—that just stays with you.
WHY THESE STORIES MATTER
We’ve said it before, but it’s worth saying again: rescue isn’t always dramatic. It’s not all hero moments and happy endings. Sometimes, it’s long nights, slow progress, and the constant worry of whether you’re doing enough. It’s trying to stretch donations to cover another vet visit, another round of meds, another month of food.
But cats like Necter and Crystal remind us why it matters.
Necter, who started life sick and motherless, now naps in sunbeams and plays with the other cats like he owns the place.
Crystal, who can’t walk or jump, lives a full life with patience, comfort, and care.
They’re not “just cats.” They’re little lives with histories, emotions, and the ability to love back.

ONE SANCTUARY. DOZENS OF STORIES. TWO MORE WORTH TELLING.
Necter and Crystal are just two of many. But they remind us of the bigger picture—that rescue work isn’t about numbers, it’s about names. It’s about the tiny victories, the slow healing, and the trust that takes months to earn.
